The best books on Kiruna and the surrounding area, the latest art publications, and local handicrafts by, among others, Randi Marainen, Erica Huuvva, Katarina Spik Skum, and Gunnel Tjäder—all this and much more can be found in Kin’s well-stocked shop in the town hall building.
In the museum shop, you’ll find a curated selection of books on art, local history, society, the environment, and culture. In addition to literature, there are crafts and souvenirs made by local artists and artisans. The selection is continuously updated, and each year Kin collaborates with a bookstore that curates a special selection of titles for the shop. In 2025, Kin is partnering with the Berlin-based bookstore Pro qm. The year before, it was Mondo Books from Tromsø. The shop is open during the museum’s regular hours and offers an excellent opportunity to explore contemporary art before or after visiting the exhibitions. You’ll also find beautiful and affordable gifts.
Since 2024, Kin has operated a reception with a museum shop on the ground floor in the town hall Kristallen, Kiruna. The furniture, itself an artwork, is made by artist Luca Lee Frei and titled Mobile Lobby (2024). It belongs to Kin’s collection and is a sculpture designed as well to serve a function. It functions as Kin’s reception and consists of a desk divided into three parts with a freestanding shelf made in three sections. The versatile piece is designed with mobility in mind and is equipped with wheels that make it easy for movement. The structure’s emerald-green color provides a striking and cohesive visual presence in the space. During the museum’s opening hours, the sculpture transforms into a welcoming hub that serves as an information center for the institution. The integration of four stools and a table on trestles further enhances the piece’s functionality. Mobile Lobby was produced by Luleå Design and Special Carpentry.
Luca Lee Frei grew up in Lugano and has lived in Malmö since the early 2000s. He recently relocated to Stockholm. In his art, he combines sculpture, installation, textiles, exhibition, and book design into works that often have a practical use. He is interested in collective processes and pedagogy and often works with both historical references and everyday themes.
Founded in 1999, Pro qm is one of Europe’s leading art and theory bookstores, as well as a space for interdisciplinary discussions and debates on topics ranging from the urban and architecture to art and philosophy. The name Pro qm—which can be translated as “per square meter”—refers to space and place in relation to the subjects explored in and by the bookstore. Based on theoretical debates and discussions on urban policy and alternative spaces for cultural production, the bookstore developed into a physical space for engaging a broader public.
